#55. Where is the Lord God of Elijah?
Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.
II Kings 2:14 NKJV
Earlier this year I met a man who told me he bought a Maserati. The only problem was it had been totaled in an accident and, in addition to significant body damage, its engine had been destroyed. He had a Maserati but it was of very little use without an engine.
Elisha had the mantle of Elijah. With this mantle the other prophets would recognize the succession of the office. But Elisha knew that the mantle of Elijah was of no help if the God of Elijah was not also with him. It was not the might of Elijah that caused the oil to last for the widow throughout the famine. It was not the strength of Elijah that raised the widow’s son from the dead or called fire down from Heaven on Carmel or on the captains and their fifties who came to take him. It was the Lord God of Elijah who did these great deeds through His servant. As Elisha returned to the Jordan he prayed for the Lord God of Elijah to be with him as He was with Elijah.
Today we have many treasures even greater than the mantle of Elijah. We have the whole Scripture at our fingertips, not a mere portion of the Old Testament on rare scrolls. We have the faithful preaching of the Word in nearly every city in America and in most countries around the world. We have sermons in abundance, catechisms, creeds, and great writings from the church fathers. We have all these things and yet if we do not have the Lord God of Elijah we have nothing.
Elisha’s attention was not on the mantle in his hands but immediately on the Lord and with that great need, he cried out to the Lord in prayer. The Lord God of Elijah was with Elisha and would be for the remainder of his life. As you face the labors and trials of life are you calling on the Lord God of Elijah today or trusting in the mantle of a prophet? We have many privileges 2,000 years after the ascension of Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, we still need the Lord God of Elijah to be with us or we have nothing. Cry out to Him while He still may be found!

*If you have the time and would like to read further on this prayer of Elisha at the Jordan river, I would highly encourage reading Charles Spurgeon’s sermon on this text: https://www.spurgeon.org/resource-library/sermons/where-is-the-god-of-elijah#flipbook/ .
