Hebrews 1:1-2

Last time we considered the first great proposition of Scripture from beginning to end: “God Is.” It is the great proposition of theology and of the Christian faith. It is the beginning of the Scripture and revealed throughout the Scripture. God does not need to be proved because He is and there is none higher than Him. Scripture declares and reveals God, it does not prove Him. We turn our attention next to those things of God which are declared by Scripture.
He Is Above All
The translators of the authorized version recognized the central place of “God” in Hebrews 1:1. Sometimes the most important word is in the center of the sentence which is just where ὁ θεὸς, “God”, is in the first sentence of Hebrews 1. God is first and above all and His name is given the honor of being first in the English translation. Before all else, above all else, God. This is the testimony of the Old and New Testaments:
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
Psalm 95:3
For thou Lord, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all Gods.
Psalm 97:9
There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Ephesians 4:5-6
There is nothing above God, neither philosophy of men, government, idea, or person. God is above all.
God is the Center of All things
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created He them.
Genesis 1:27
All creation declares its maker but none is made in His image but man alone. “God created man in His own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” We do not bare the image of any other but of Him who is the center of all things, the first and the last, God Himself.
We have thought of thy loving kindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple (Psalm 48:9). God is not merely the center of all creation but He is the center of all creation’s thought. For the believer He is the center of all our hope and joy.
The focus of all creation is not on Abraham, not on Mary, not the Apostles, not the Temple, not eschatology… The focus of all creation is on God the center of all worship, praise, and adoration in whose very image we are made with knowledge righteousness and holiness.
We see the great blasphemy and idolatry then of the religions like Rome that put men and women as the focus of all things. Over and over they cry out “Hail Mary Hail Mary Hail Mary.” They have at the minimum made her the center of their thought when the center of all thought, worship, and adoration must be on God. Anything else is idolatry. It is God’s loving kindness we think on, dwell on, meditate on, rejoice on, and no other. God is the Center of all things!
We see further the foundation for the world’s attack on the the way God made man, male and female. The world has always desired to remove God from its thoughts. It seeks to suppress the truth in unrighteousness and reaps the rewards of its folly, even a reprobate mind and the pursuit of the unnatural. In its foolish effort to undo God’s creation order the world seeks to destroy the whole concept of male and female, men and women categories. The tragic, grotesque, bloody results are on display for all to see. If they cannot murder the image bearers of God in the womb they will seek to cut them apart in the operating room, or make them unrecognizable with hormone treatments. And yet, in all of it, they cannot destroy the image of God in man. God remains the center of all things no matter how fervently the heathen rage.
God is the Only God
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one LORD.
Deuteronomy 6:6
I am He, before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no savior. I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.
Isaiah 43:10-12
I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me, I formed thee, though thou has not known me.
Isaiah 45:6
God is the only God. There is none other before or after Him which tells us this…
God is the First and the Last
Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
Isaiah 44:6
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the LORD, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty… And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last…
Revelation 1:8,17
Our God who is first and last is the eternal God…
God is the eternal and everlasting God
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and He shall thrust out the enemy from before thee.
Deuteronomy 33:27
Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of His understanding.
Isaiah 40:28
Friends, do you rejoice and delight in the truth every day that your God is the only God, the first and the last, the beginning and the end? If we are to call ourselves Christians we must delight in God as He truly is. I marvel at this as I ponder it again today, that this God is our God forever and ever and He has taken a wretched man like me to be His child. It is a thought too great for my mind but how I rejoice in it!
Keeping these truths in mind, next time if the Lord wills we will consider the second great proposition of Scripture, Theology, and the Christian religion.
