And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.
Matthew 25:8
Is unbelief sin? Some Christians say no. In 1855 Charles Spurgeon gave a powerful sermon on this very topic where he summarized unbelief as the parent of all sin, the sin from which all other sin flows.
Jesus said in John 16:7-9 “I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment; of sin, because they do not believe in Me…”
John 3:18, just two verses from the most famous verse in the Bible, the Lord says the same thing: “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
The sin of unbelief was the root sin in Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit. They doubted God, “Has God really said…” Unbelief was the root sin of those who rejected Moses in the wilderness and the prophets of Israel. They did not believe God who spoke by the prophets and instead continued in sin. Unbelief was the great sin of the foolish virgins. They were called to prepare themselves for the Lord’s return but they did not believe His coming was imminent so they were not prepared for His return. The sign of their unbelief was this – they did not obey the voice of God. When the Lord returns it will be too late.
Even in hell, the wicked continue in their unbelief. The rich man argued with father Abraham about the solution to the pending doom of his living brothers. Abraham told the rich man the brothers had Moses and the prophets, let them hear them. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God therefore the brothers needed only believe the Word and they will escape the wrath and curse of God which the rich man was facing for all eternity. There in the torments of hell the rich man still did not believe but said, “no, father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead…” The rich man was unprepared for the hour of his death because of unbelief. The foolish virgins were unprepared for the return of the bridegroom because of unbelief.
Jesus said, Repent of your sins, believe in me and be saved! In John 3:15, He put it like this: that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Again in John 6:40 Jesus said, “And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” He is the resurrection and the life, He who believes in Jesus, though he may die, he shall live and whoever lives and believes in Jesus will never die. Do you believe this? The wise virgins believed. The foolish virgins did not. They did not believe God’s Word. They did not believe He would come quickly. They were unprepared to meet him and were cast into utter torment. Dear reader, if you are unbelieving today, do not continue in your unbelief. Rather, prepare your soul to meet your Creator!
