A Memorial of Evil: 50 Years of Legalized Abortion

Sunday, January 22, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the legalization of abortion nationwide through the 1973 Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision. Since that terrible date, at least 70,000,000 babies in the United States, more than 18% of all children, have been murdered in the womb. While the CDC and pro-abortion groups show a decline in abortion over time, states including CA, NH, and MD do not report their numbers (1). Many abortions using the pill are also not reported. Through unreported methods and unreporting states, the number of abortions is almost certainly much higher than the CDC data indicates.

If the U.S. data were not tragic enough, the worldwide practice of abortion paints an even darker picture. Pro-death Guttmacher.org reports that 73,000,000 abortions take place worldwide every year. That number equates to approximately 40% of all children being murdered before they reach birth.

On June 24, 2022 the Supreme Court in a landmark decision overturned Roe vs. Wade in this manner – they turned the question of abortion back to the states. While many Christians and pro-life groups celebrated the outcome, the way the order was written evidenced just how far our country has abandoned any type of Biblical worldview it may have had when it was founded. The court deliberately refused to recognize the baby in the womb as a person protected by God and/or the Constitution.

The 5th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution says the following:

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury… nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law…

U.S. Constitution – 5th Amendment

The supreme court ignored the 5th amendment and refused to say the little child in the womb of his mother at any stage, let alone conception/fertilization where God creates life, is a person protected by the 5th amendment. (The full Supreme Court opinion can be read here)

Held: The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.

The permissibility of abortion, and the limitations, upon it, are to be resolved like most important questions in our democracy: by citizens trying to persuade one another and then voting.”

Justice Kavenaugh in his concurring opinion perhaps summarized the “conservative” court justices when he wrote

Abortion is a profoundly difficult and contentious issue because it presents an irreconcilable conflict between the interests of a pregnant woman who seeks an abortion and the interests in protecting fetal life… On the question of abortion, the Constitution is therefore neither pro-life nor pro-choice. The Constitution is neutral and leaves the issue for the people and their elected representatives to resolve through the democratic process in the States or Congress – like the numerous other difficult questions of American social and economic policy that the Constitution does not address.

Page 124 (bold added for emphasis)

When it comes to crimes and great evils such as murder, the interests of the criminal and murderer are always (or almost always) in conflict with the victim(s) of the crime. Conflict between the perpetrator of evil and the victim is the very nature and essence of crime. It is because of this conflict that there are laws with the full force of government behind them to protect potential victims and to bring criminals to justice when this conflict is acted upon by the criminal.

Rather than reiterate the right of the baby in the womb to due process of the law before being executed by his mother, father, and their doctor (so called), one of the most conservative justices defended the evil of abortion by acting as if the constitution was neutral regarding the taking of an innocent child’s life and life in general.

The whole scope of the Constitution, highlighted in the 5th amendment is exactly the opposite – it is entirely concerned about life, so much so, that it is written to protect our freedoms while we live. Under such an argument as Kavenaugh’s there would seemingly be no reason states could not vote to allow abortion proponents, under the euphemism of reproductive rights, to have a conflict with Bible believing Christians, and simply eradicate them by majority vote.

The effect of the so-called Supreme Court victory, is that 2-6% fewer surgical abortions are taking place. However, that estimate includes Texas with nearly a 99% decline in abortion while it does not include the abortion tourism states of CA and MD. It is likely the real change post June 24, 2022 is no decline at all, or even worse, an increase. With victories like that, what would a loss look like?

Georgia

In my home state of Georgia, the law recognizes an unborn child in the following way:

A member of the species homo sapiens at any stage of development who is carried in the womb. A person commits the offense of feticide if he or she willfully and without legal justification causes the death of an unborn child by any injury to the mother of such child, which would be murder if it resulted in the death of such mother, or if he or she when in the commission of a felony, causes the death of an unborn child. A person convicted of the offense of feticide shall be punished by imprisonment for life.”

§ 16-5-80. Feticide; Voluntary Manslaughter of an Unborn Child

This seems like a Godly law and until this point it is. Unborn child murder is feticide. To kill any child at any stage in the womb from fertilization to birth will be treated as if a full grown adult were murdered. But the law does not stop there. It continues in section “f”.

Nothing in this Code section shall be construed to permit the prosecution of: 1) Any person for conduct relating to an abortion for which the consent of the pregnant woman, or person authorized by law to act on her behalf, has been obtained or for which such consent is implied by law; 2) any person for any medical treatment of the pregnant woman or her unborn child; or 3) any woman with respect to her unborn child.

§ 16-5-80. Feticide; Voluntary Manslaughter of an Unborn Child

The law we celebrate as equal for all and upon all is not equal for unborn children. It discriminates against the youngest members of society. It is partial and unjust. Everyone who kills an unborn child is guilty of feticide except the mother and her doctor. Similar logic was used to justify slavery in generations past. The letter of the law condemns murder and gets around it for abortion by stating that fathers, mothers, and doctors (so-called) will not be prosecuted for child murder.

The Lord has much to say about partiality of the law:

For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe. He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing. Therefore love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

Deuteronomy 10:17-19 NKJV

Diverse weights and diverse measures, they are both alike, an abomination to the Lord.

Proverbs 20:10 NKJV

Anti-Abortion Methods

Responses among anti-abortion advocates, Christian and otherwise, has been varied. At least four methods are currently in use:

Ignorance – Many Christians ignore the issue of abortion altogether, neither praying about, or lifting a finger to assist. Though they may give money to pregnancy resource centers without discrimination to their presentation of the gospel (or their lack thereof), the cares for those little ones appointed to death are few. The Lord responds to this method in this way even as he calls us to wake from our slumber and serve Him with heart, soul, strength, and mind:

Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, “Surely we did not know this,” Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?

Proverbs 24:11-12 NKJV

Flattery – Some, especially among Roman Catholics, resort to flattering the mothers and exalting them above measure. This has been recounted in other places but such statements as “You are Christ’s priceless treasure, His pearl of great price…” are frequently poured on those mothers intent to murder. To such a method the Lord’s Word says:

A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

Proverbs 29:5 NKJV

Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men…

Isaiah 29:13 NKJV

Regulation – Spearheaded by the Supreme Court and many right to life groups, the answer to the problem of abortion is to regulate abortion. That which is evil and sin must never be tolerated. But how many believe this? Instead, there is perceived power in regulation that would vanish with banishment of abortion altogether. Proponents of regulation prefer that controls be put in place over the evil rather than the evil being destroyed. Compare this to other moral issues and the problem is obvious. How many wives would ask their husbands to regulate their adultery? How would the IRS handle you if you practiced moderate tax fraud and kept it regulated? What if you intended to kill three people but regulated your plans and only killed one. Would the judge praise you for such restraint? And yet, National Right to Life, following the Supreme Court, advocates for just this very thing – regulation of abortion rather than removal of this blight from our country. Christians regularly donate vast sums of money to these pro-life groups. To this the Lord reminds us:

These six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him:A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil,A false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.

Proverbs 6:16-19 NKJV

He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the just, both of them alike are an abomination to the Lord. (Proverbs 17:15 NKJV).

Proverbs 17:15 NKJV

Proclamation – One further option remains. Promote, proclaim, and protect the truth. Stand firm on the God-given principal of equal rights and justice for the born and the unborn. God does not show partiality between the born and unborn and neither can we. Murder of innocent children in the womb is just as egregious in God’s eyes as murder outside the womb and so it must be for us. We must proclaim the value of the little child’s life. We must promote righteousness and truth according to God’s Word.

You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor.

Leviticus 19:15 NKJV

Before the Lord, For He is coming to judge the earth. With righteousness He shall judge the world, and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 98:9 NKJV

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.

Romans 1:18 NKJV

For there is no partiality with God.

Romans 2:11 NKJV

How Shall We Proclaim?

Witness to the world lying in darkness. Go into all the world telling them whatsoever the Lord has commanded:

Speak the Truth in Love. How will the world know without hearing the truth and how will they hear without a preacher or a lay person giving an answer for the hope that is in them. How will they know of Christ unless we confess Christ? The faithful servant of the Lord always speaks the truth in love.

  • He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart; (Psalm 15:2 NKJV).
  • For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips(Proverbs 8:7 NKJV).
  • He who speaks truth declares righteousness, But a false witness, deceit (Proverbs 12:17 NKJV).
  • These are the things you shall do: Speak each man the truth to his neighbor; Give judgment in your gates for truth, justice, and peace; (Zechariah 8:16 NKJV).
  • For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ (2 Corinthians 2:17 NKJV).

Abortion remains murder. This hasn’t changed from the beginning. The church must continue to proclaim the truth calling good, “good”, and calling evil, “evil”. God does not mince words on this topic.

If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

Exodus 21:22-25 NKJV

His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity. He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the secret places he murders the innocent; His eyes are secretly fixed on the helpless. He lies in wait secretly, as a lion in his den; He lies in wait to catch the poor; He catches the poor when he draws him into his net.

Psalm 10:7-9 NKJV

Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

I John 3:15 NKJV

Remind each other, children, parents, and proponents that God hears the cry of the oppressed.

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of troublefor the needy shall not always be forgotten; the expectation of the poor shall not perish forever.

Psalms 9:9,18 NKJV

The work the church is called to do is warn the wicked of the end of their ways which is surely death and bear witness of the one who delivers from death, Jesus Christ the way, the truth, and the life. The way of the righteous man is to speak righteousness and to care for the fatherless, widow, and alien. In that presentation of the gospel of God concerning Jesus Christ, we see Jesus saving murderers and the wicked. If he saved me, He is certainly able to save a murderer. See what He did with Saul and at Corinth:

Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”And he said, “Who are You, Lord? ”Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do? ”Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

Acts 9:19 NKJV

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God (I Corinthians 6:9-11 NKJV).

I Corinthians 6:9-11 NKJV

What Do I Do?

In times when the church is confronted with horrific and prolonged sin with weakness in its ranks, it is always called to the same things. Pray to God for deliverance from the wicked. Pray for Godly laws without partiality. Pray for salvation of the wicked and revival of the church. Proclaim His glorious name and work to all ends of the Earth. He has by Himself purged our sins, He has saved to the uttermost those that should be saved, we must call upon Him in faith, pray to Him for help, and proclaim His glory to all ends of the earth. Prepare for God to give us the good desire of our heart. Are we ready for more children needing adoption, more mothers needing shelter, and more cross-centered, preaching and teaching of Christ? Should the Lord answer our petitions, needs will increase and the church must shine.
