#90. Humility in the Hour of Need

Published by Ben Stahl on

Now when she came to the man of God at the hill, she caught him by the feet, but Gehazi came near to push her away. But the man of God said, “Let her alone; for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me, and has not told me.”

II Kings 4:27 NKJV

Imagine if someone came to you, fell down with their head bowed, and took hold of your feet. This is one of the greatest postures of humility or reverence that can be shown to someone. This was a constant occurrence in Jesus’s life as people came to Him for help, healing, and forgiveness. The Greek woman, a Syrophoenician by birth, whose daughter had a demon came and fell at Jesus feet.* Jairus came to Jesus when his daughter had died and fell at His feet.** When the one leper in ten, a Samaritan, returned to thank Jesus he fell down on his face at His feet to worship Him.*** In the Old Testament, when Abigail came to make peace with David for the offenses of Nabal her husband she came to David and fell at his feet in respect.****

The Shunammite woman made it to the top of Mount Carmel where she approached Elisha, the man of God. Immediately she caught him by the feet. This was not a sign of the Shunammite worshipping Elisha, but of reverence and also of great need. Holding his feet meant she would not let him go until he had heard and addressed her need. She who had lost her only son went to the man of God for help in her hour of need and went to him with great humility.

Clearly this type of humility was not common for Elisha or Gehazi to see and Gehazi came to push her away. The idea was, ‘Who does this woman think she is coming and hindering Elisha’s steps by clinging to his feet?’ Many will come telling us not to cling to the feet of Christ for salvation. They will want us to look anywhere else but to God who alone can do all things. They will tell us to go back the way we came for the Savior does not want to hear us. They will tell us to turn to go to places that cannot help us. But the Shunammite woman held onto the feet of Elisha and would not let him go. In her hour of need, she humbled herself and went to her Lord through His prophet, who is referred to in this section as “the man of God” to make this connection to the Lord very clear in our minds.

The truth of the matter is that our hour of need is every hour. The Lord gives us our breath and if He were to remove His hand from us for just a minute we would be no more. Are you clinging to the feet of Christ? Do you hold fast to His Word of everlasting life with unyielding determination? The Shunammite woman clung to Elisha’s feet. She held fast and would not let go until her need was addressed, however that would happen.

Friends, lay hold on Christ Jesus and His word and do not let Him go. He is freely offered to you in His Word. He has all power to save you. The world will seek to pull you away with every distraction and sin imaginable, do not let go! Come before Him in prayer and with humility. Fall down at His feet, for the one who comes to Him, He will by no means cast out.*****
